Hypericum perforatum is rich in essential oils, including azulene (sedative and wound healing agent). Hyperforin and hypericin – two phytochemical compound contained in Hypericum perforatum – enhance release of serotonin, “joy hormone”, known to normalize emotional status, motivation, and healthy sleep. It also comprises vitamins C, E, P, and PP. Herb and flowers of Hypericum perforatum contain about 13% of tannins and 17% of resinous substances as well as carbohydrates, flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, and others), antracenes, saponins, alkaloids, coumarins, choline, and a number of mineral salts.

Vitamin С is a powerful antioxidant that effectively neutralizes free radicals, enhances immunity, and protects against ageing-related processes and consequences of psychical stresses.

In the winter, supplements of Hypericum perforatum increase skin sensitivity to sunlight so that the skin receive more sunlight and, thus, release more vitamin D.
